Free Patterns :

  • start with an easy pattern, such as a balloon : Iris folding balloon pattern
  • Google “iris folding patterns” and you will find hundreds!

Tips :

  • look for cheap 10 packs of sellotape to stick on the paper strips
  • use old magasines, books, sheet music, wrapping paper and paper shopping bags for the paper strips
  • the backing card needs to be stronger – you may need to invest a little and also buy some sharp cutting scissors
  • we found glittery paper to be the most effective for the Iris, but some people use buttons, or a small picture, or other decorations they may find
  • when you are used to Iris folding, pre-cut the paper strips to length, preparing them on the table in the right order, then stick them on the card – it’s quicker

Tips :

  • make the ring using old electrical wire and electrical tape to secure
  • be inventive to cover and decorate the ring – plaited wool, material strips, ribbons,…
  • use any strong thread or wool for the web, insert beads as you go

Tips :

  • use a double thread, so it doesn’t break when you are sewing
  • if you sew a button in the centre, leave the extra thread hanging until you are sure you won’t be sewing the yoyo onto something as a decoration
  • for the hairband, glue the elastic and felt cover on with a hot glue gun
